What you Need to Know
Residential and commercial EV Charging Stations currently have four levels available, with level 4 exclusively intended for Tesla vehicles. If you own a Tesla then your decision is easy. Otherwise, EV owners need to choose between level 1, 2, and 3 of EV charging stations.
- Level 1 – The level 1 charger is similar to plugging your car into a standard household 120 volt AC outlet. A level 1 charger typically takes up to 12 hours to completely recharge your EV battery. This option is best for charging an EV overnight or while at home. Level 1 chargers are the most cost-effective type of EV Charging Station.
- Level 2 – The level 2 charger is the most common EV charger and results in significantly faster charging times in comparison to level 1. Charging time for a level 2 typically ranges from three to eight hours to fully recharge the EV battery. The cost of a level 2 charge will be slightly higher than the level 1 and is best used in garages or on the exterior of
your home or business.
- Level 3 – The level 3 charger, better known as “Quick Charger,” utilizes a DC current for rapid charging and you can typically achieve this in 20-30 minutes. The cost of the level 3 paired with the fact that they are not currently compatible will all EV’s is the downside. Quick chargers are commonly used for commercial application.
