What you Need to Know

Residential and commercial EV Charging Stations currently have 4 levels available, although the level 4 is only intended for the Tesla vehicle. If you own a Tesla then your decision is easy. All other electric vehicle owners need to choose between level 1, 2, and 3 of EV charger installation.

  • Level 1 (120 Volts / 15 Amps)– The level 1 charger similar to plugging your car into a standard household 120 volt AC outlet. Typically takes less than 13 hours to completely recharge the EV battery. This option is best for charging EV’s overnight or while at home. On the upside it’s by far the least expensive type of EV Charging Station.
  • Level 2 (240 Volts / 30 Amps)– The level 2 charger results in significantly faster charging times in comparison to the level 1 and is the most common. Charging time for a level 2 will typically range from 3 to 8 hours to fully recharge the EV battery. Costing of the level 2 will be slightly higher than the level 1 and is best used in garages or on the exterior of your home or business.
  • Level 3 (480 Volts / 100 Amps)– The level 3 charger better known as “Quick Charger” utilizes a DC current for rapid charging and you can typically achieve this in 20 - 30 minutes. Costing of the level 3 and the fact they are not currently compatible will all EV’s is the however the downside. Quick chargers are commonly used for commercial application.
  • Level 4– The level 4 charger is currently used for Tesla vehicles. This charger contains a unique plug which only accepts the Tesla vehicle models. If you are the owner of a Tesla then this system is the way to go, using a similar DC system as the level 3 charger described above.
